Lockheed Hercules – Part Five – Paint By Numbers

The Bob Ross School Of Aircraft Camouflage

Or how I learned to hate the RCAF airframe finishers. Because they used three colours on the CC-130. They only did it this one time, but that was one time too many.

The three-grey camo for this plane is a one-off. It was apparently thought to be something of a Mediterranean scheme – probably about the time the Canadian Army had a committent with the UN to stop civil wars in Yugoslavia. They eventually parked the plane up in Edmonton in a transport squadron.

The colour call-out from Italeri may well have been accurate to the decals – I opted to download a diagram from Belcher in Canada – thinking him to be more apposite. It was only after I had got to marking out the pattern on the undercoat that I realised that Belcher’s port and starboard diagrams do not match. There is a bit of fiddling in the violin section, but not a lot.

The odd appearance of the heading image is because I find that I get confused with three-tones as to which bit goes where. I used sticky dots and bits of masking tape to define each colour so that I could see them clearly delineated. I’ll peal off the dots progressively as I spray the scheme. It is as yet undecided as to whether to spray with masking or freehand.
