F-82 Twin Mustang – Part Eight – No. 92

A slight pause in the proceedings to praise a paint maker. GSI Creos in Japan are in deadly rivalry with Tamiya for the hobby painter’s dollar or Yen. I am not a zealot – I use paints from both of them. But I always turn to Mr. Color No.92 when night falls.

It is listed as Semi-gloss Black. it might as easily be called semi-matte or Coal Black. All these terms have been seen for the semi-reflective paint that WW2 bombers and night fighters wore on their undersides. In the case of the night fighters the whole of the aircraft might have been black.

I’ve used the Mr. Color rattle cans as well as the bottled form – and sprayed it from a dual-action airbrush as well as a single action one. Whether thinned with rapid or levelling thinner seems to make no real difference – the finish always turns out superbly. If there were no decaling to be done I would just leave it as the final finish.

If there are other hues and shades in the Mr. Color range that work half as well as this one, I would use them exclusively – as it is I think I have found that their Madder Red No. 68 is equally as good with a gloss finish.
