Caudron C-445 – Part Three – The Jig Is Up

And as Lou Gosset might have it – ” and running…”.

This was the first time that then new Slovakian jigs got their real trial. The Caudron was a perfect size for the WW2 pattern – though there were more adjustments to make on the rack than you’d think. The wing clamps were a little problematical but the supports were all shaped to work perfectly with small elastic bands. When you got the levels right and strapped in, the whole thing was very solid.

Of course the basic premise was always that the kit surfaces were square, plumb, and well-fitted. You fettled and fiddled until the whole was there in dry form and then took off each individual member for cementation. The fact that there was no movement and you had both hands free for attaching things made it all a dream of precision. Even if there were compromises to be made, they could be held overnight to set solidly.

Thoroughly delighted with the jigs.
