Or a festival. Not sure which would be better, but it needs to be a day that can have good things to eat and drink.
I’m talking a regular, yearly holiday that can be gazetted in the Western Australian calendar the same as ANZAC Day or Easter. A day that you get off work, if you’re working, and they pay you for it. A day that can sneak into regular calendars and puzzle people overseas.
It should be a day well away from the other major religious or civic holidays – so as to provide a unique character and give something to look froward to in the year. It should also have retail backing from the suppliers – they can have special offers for the day that either sell lots of new gear or some of the old gunk on the shelves.
There could be special songs to sing and other maudlin traditions, but what I am really hoping for is a traditional menu – food and drink that you don’t get the rest of the year. Unlike Christmas or Thanksgiving the food should be consumed all on the day, and not carry over for weeks in various forms of leftovers. I would be satisfied with takeaway and a tinny.
Some may argue that we already have a weekend of the Big Local Model Exhibition and make happy with this. It’s splendid, but limited to one location – I would see the joy of Modeller’s Day extend everywhere. And i would have it embrace all divisions of the art; trains, cars, doll houses, figure gaming, scale modelling, R/C modelling, etc. A vast celebration of…of…
Well, let’s be frank…a celebration of The Little World
Little World Day.
I shall consult with my colleagues and let you know which day is selected. You may wish to make a Little World Day list so that your family knows which present you’d like…
