Fokker Eindecker – Part Three – Stick and String

Well, that was a surprise. I actually enjoyed the process of rigging this little fighter plane. It doesn’t have all the wires it is entitled to, but it has as many as I have the patience to attach.

The local hobby shop man didn’t have the Ezy-line that I thought was needed but he did have some thin line made by Mig Ammo. It seems to have been designed for model ship rigging – the shop had stocks in several thicknesses. I took a guess and got the .02 thickness.

It strung well, stuck instantly with superglue, and had enough elasticity to rig between stations without sagging. But it was a bugger to feed into the holes in the wing – I eventually resorted to making a super-fine wire needle to capture the end of the thread and feed it through the wings.

In retrospect, I should probably have chose the .03 or .04 thread for this purpose – it would have as good an appearance and be much easier to handle. As it is, I will use this up before investing in more. But I suspect that the Mig Ammo people make their fortune rather like Coleman’s Mustard did – by the amount people waste in being unable to accurately dispense it.

The kit built beautifully – square and plumb – and the decals went on superbly. It will be a good companion for the Morane Saulnier N in the WW1 hall. I would like to find a Bristol monoplane as well.
