Kawanishi Norm – Part Four – A Powerful Flop

From all accounts great things were expected from the Kawanishi reconnaissance float plane.

And then the contra-rotating propellers and jettison-able float proved problematical and the service missions undertaken with the type were failures. So it was quietly shoved back into a training role.

The appearance of the aircraft in the box art was what attracted me to it – that and the fact that it was on the very cheapest end of the stash sale table at the Big Local Scale Model Exhibition. $ 10 in a busted box. I screwed my courage up to the sticking point, unlocked the steel sliding bolts on my wallet, and took the plunge.

I have not been as delighted with a purchase for a long time – the BLSME always comes through on the Sunday session – if you are prepared to build what they sell, you can have what you like. Do not cry as you hand over cash as you may wet the decal sheet and make problems later…

And will it find a place in the Air World collection? It has already taken a place beside the Fairey Swordfish and a Kingfisher. Now to figure out how to make a cheap and easy water diorama. I thought of a baking pan full of blue Jello but this is just a preliminary thought. Don’t want a Jello typhoon all over the kitchen bench…
