De Havilland DH2 – Part One – Another Revellation

This little guy was sitting forlornly in the legacy sale box – along with the Fokker Eindekker and the Nieuport 28. Well, if you are in for a penny…

The idea of making a 1:72 scale model of something this spindly is pretty desperate – as much on my part as on that of Revell in the 1960’s. But they saw fit to mould it and there it was and here we are. The box shows the effects of time as much as I do.

The readers of this column will recognise the colour of the plastic – it’s the same Cockroach Brown as the SPAD XIII that was painted in Rickenbacker scheme. This one will have a standard late-war British two colour, though oddly enough the colour-call-out doesn’t match the box art.

The sprue trees are small and full of flash. There are ejector posts and marks, but no sink holes. Even the pilot is round and fully packed. He’s actually worth painting as he has some character.

The old decals are complete and haven’t yellowed…I keep my fingers crossed for their utility.

The yellow has gotten to the instruction sheet, however, though it does have the howlers of the period. You are urged to ” break ” the parts from the sprue tree, and paint them ” if desired ” with Revell enamel paint “. I remember Revell paints and they had a smell that would have cleared a trench.

I any case, wish me luck when I go over the top with this one. 12 straight, separate wing struts and not a jig in sight…
