How many of the daily routines that fence your life are done out of necessity?
How many out of enthusiasm? And how many are pure habit?
All the way from eating and sleeping through cleanliness and exercise, we can have good habits or bad ones. In many cases we cannot tell the one from the other…and when this occurs, it is time to take serious stock and make changes. Note: it’s generally considered smarter to go from bad ones to good ones…Just sayin’…
I have done the exercise for myself and found that my nightly habit of coffee after 9:00 PM led to an equal nightly habit of being awake until 1:30 in the morning. Good on the nights when I was standing watch on the bridge of the battle cruiser, or burgling posh townhouses, but inconvenient otherwise. I have switched to weak tea and now sleep sounder.
I have gotten into the habit of calling into hobby shops to see what latest temptation has arrived, but I have a shelf full of a dozen past follies that need to be built. I can shelve this pattern for six months or more. The fear of missing out can be countered by a fear of poverty.
I shall still pursue life and try to enjoy it, but if I can lose the bad and gain the good the pursuit can probably be faster.
