Yakovlev 15 – Stalin’s Stopgap

Don’t panic and start to look for previous posts about this Soviet fighter – this is the one and only mention it’ll get.

The PM models Yak 15 was cheap enough by any standards – even in Perth. It cannot be said to occupy many minds nor cause much lust, no matter who kits it. PM never do a really sterling job anyway. But it was fun looking and the red paint scheme was appealing on a dull day.

The parts were no better than previous PM offerings – indistinct panel lines and grainy plastic surface. They did fit, but then there were few of them…The canopy was commendably clear and precise and the decals were a treat to work with.

The landing gear would have been better retracted – but I have a suspicion that time and humidity will fold those spindly legs anyway. I got value, because I paid little.

The plane itself seems to have been a problematical attempt to fly something while other things were in construction. It fried its tail wheels and landed badly – it was relegated to training very soon after introduction. It would have been no better than a Bell Airacomet in any sense of the word, and they were woeful enough.

But I have a new Soviet plane for the collection and it did not cost much – I have had a good week.
