Boeing Dreamliner – Part Four – Going Up In The Old Style

Retro is a word that is bandied a lot – but it can be a very flexible one – in this case as far back as the 1960’s.

El Al got a new Boeing 787 Dreamliner in 2018 and decided to paint it in an older livery. I think this was a superb decision – and a lot more dignified than a lot of the more modern designs that look like spaghetti. It also made it easier for me to make my own version of it with inkjet printing.

The chief problem was to correlate the blue colour of the tail and lettering with the side stripe around the windows. I did it backwards, printing the tail before I chose the Mr. Color paint. it was only a matter of blind luck that Bright Blue was close to the printed hue – all it needed was a little Duck Egg Green dropped in to come to the same shade.

Next time I need to do this sort of thing I will paint a patch of the paint on a plastic chip, scan it into the computer, and then match it to the Photoshop Elements program.

The decision to model wheels-up seems to have worked out well – an MDF and wire stand holds it up above the clouds. You may not see it in the pictures…

I think this has been a fitting model from an old club mate. I would rather had him than the stash sale, but in the event, there is beauty somewhere.
