No joking. Take your modelling seriously. You’ll benefit – we’ll all benefit.
My scale modelling club is comprised of a bunch of jokers – we bounce one-liners and corny Dad jokes off one another at every session. There is no decorum in the main room, and precious little more in the library and the kitchen. Words are spoken and names are called, and it is glorious. We have not deteriorated into a food fight yet, but that is because we are senior fellows and appreciate cakes and snacks.
But we are serious about modelling. We really do research the model kits we build, we really do learn new techniques, and we really do want to do a good job of building. We’re not grim, but we’re dedicated. Occasionally we stray into the twilight zone and start counting rivets, but as long as they are on our own builds it is okay. Let’s just say we treat the scale model hobby with respect.
If we didn’t – if we just slopped around and didn’t care what the end result looked like – if we didn’t look and didn’t paint and didn’t try – we would be letting the club down as well as ourselves. The old military charge of bringing the regiment into disrepute would be the closest thing that I could think of. Bad show.
Far better to be keen. Be serious. Fussy, if need be. Go the extra mile – paint the extra layer, do the extra weathering, get the good set of decals. You will never regret it, and neither will the people you model with.
That’s one of the keenest modeller’s works on the heading – John Evans made it.
