Supermarine Swift FR.5 – Part One – A Christmas Belle

Yes, I did get this for Christmas, and yes, I did select it myself. I know how to operate a holiday…

This is a new Airfix kit – meaning that the plastic is a perfect consistency, the mouldings are accurate, and the instruction book is detailed enough to cope with even weird parts. There will be a decent decal sheet and even a stencil diagram for people who don’t know better…

The kits are moulded in India and sealed in heavy plastic bags. Other people complain of getting short shots from Airfix, but I have been lucky – all the new ones are more or less all there. There can be distortion on some sprue trees if something has been packed down hard for shipping, but I am willing to believe the kits leave the factory in perfect shape.

Wikipedia is less than fulsome in praise of the Swift, but it’s long development time probably doomed it to be second-rate when it finally was put in service. It seems to have been a success as an aerial reconnaissance platform, so I will include the camera windows in the nose.

It will be a bugger to put down on the nose wheel, though; there is little room and a big heavy tail.
