Something happens to the hobby. It becomes a serious business.

Good thing? You might think so if you are a devotee of contest modelling and the pursuit of prizes. Newer and bigger can get you closer to the awards. Complexity figures in this as well – if you can overwhelm a judge with extra after-market detail you may stand a chance that the more modest builds do not have.

You can’t exactly buy your way to the podium in the same way that the die-cast collectors can, because you still need the skill to assemble or build. But a newer, bigger kit is a booster rocket.

Note that sometimes it’s not as rewarding as you might wish. Moulding a model kit is a vast investment, and we know that the Messerspitstang model will more reliably return money to the accountants. If you want novelty you may have to accept it in more modest terms.

Note that in some genres, the terms are not set by you at all. Review the sort of kits that.the car modellers are offered…supercars, hotrods, and custom builds far outnumber the daily drivers of any era. Yet these humbler cars appeal to our sense of familiarity.
