That, unfortunately, was the nick-name applied to this fighter in US Navy service.

It was not a long service life. The type was found to be difficult to land, dangerous, and of marginal performance. Better offerings came from Grumman and McDonnell. The navy knew when to fold the cards and return these things to shore-based duty and training bases.

That did not stop them from being spectacular in the minds of the 50’s model-building youth. Every kid on the block build one of the old Revell kits in box scale – about 1:60 apparently.

This Fujimi offering in 1:72 was a delightful build – taken at a leisurely pace. The operating canopy is fun, but hardly accurate. ther rest of the structure is excellent, and this aircraft will feature on the new Italeri US carrier deck diorama. If I can find a pilot I’ll pop him in there. If I can find a ” mule ” deck tractor, I’ll tow it around.
