The Transient Model

Some modellers are lucky.

They get to keep their models as long as they want…whether in kit form or built-up. They have display space and protection for their work.

Others have to watch their results given away, trashed, or lost. Their only consolation is that it makes more space to build again. Yet the impermanence of their collection does reduce it, even in their eyes.

Let’s face it – some would-be modellers cannot and should not start a project. They are in situations that do not permit success. Too little money, too little space, no time available…and no possibility of saving the result. They would be better gathering kits, or information for better times to come.

Some will never see those times. Some will never have the skills. These are the people who would be served better by a collecting hobby – die-cast models for example. Or an operational hobby like running toy trains. This would be perfectly valid participation in the little world. More power to them.

Some models are truly transient…the flying model aircraft people know precisely what I mean. They may live only for a short period of time. Let us hope that they reward their their pilots with at least one perfect flight…
