Douglas Skyraider – Part One – Abandoned On The Shelf

Started, but incomplete.

Very low price – my kind of kit. And a definite prototype in mind for the finished build.

The previous owner had cemented the wing and fuselage halves together and done a pretty careful and precise job of it. The kit is designed so that the cockpit tub slips inside before the wings go on, but the fuselage can be closed up to receive it. The only error on the kit was the tailwheel strut protruding from the tail hook hole.

That could be cured by passing a fine chisel into the fuselage and severing the tail strut. It was then re-cemented into the landing position.

The clear parts looked excellent, and the decal sheet was fine – but only for 1960’s Skyraiders. I was encouraged to scour the spares drawer for alternatives.

Fujimi are a mixed bag for me – I’ve only ever built their Japanese aircraft and was worried about the panel fit. I need not have done so – it slotted well together – the only filler needed was on the nose and under the wing root.
