Bristol Belvedere – Part Three – The Mehcopter

Cue enthusiasm…reboot…reboot.

I think this is the first of the Airfix Vintage Classics that has disappointed. It is undoubtedly what it was in the original release, but like the original Blackburn Buccaneer, the Hovercraft, the Fairey Rotodyne, and the prototype Harrier, it strangely fails to please.

Perhaps Airfix were precipitate in issuing something that was still in its trials, or perhaps they just failed to mould it with enough precision.

I was dissatisfied with it as a trials aircraft so I gifted it on to a northern Alberta charter company, added some muskeg shoes to keep it upright, and painted a few fluoro orange panels to allow people to see it in blizzards.

The one real addition is a mini radar nose – this serves to disguise the dreadful two-part clear canopy. At least the crew are both in place and there is a ladder to climb aboard.

I think I’ll avoid some of their vintage kits…
