Petlyakov Pe-8 – Part Four – The Puzzle…

If you did not want me to do it, why did you provide the parts?

I address this to the Amodel engineers who moulded a complete interior bomb bay and 250kg bomb load, and then left the fuselage doors moulded shut. Not shut with a line to score and pop out – completely moulded in thick plastic.

I used to open the doors to the 1:25 AMT custom cars I built and hinge them with a bent wire bracket – all the rage in the 1960’s model scene. And I own several X-acto saws and a handle. So it was just a case of taking my courage in hand and making four cuts. The masking tape was as much to prevent over strike as it was to indicate the line.

Once the cross-wise cuts were done it was a case of scoring the length of the bay doors and then gingerly snapping them out. You never heard a sigh of relief as loud as the one I let out when they came free.

Note that the Bunnings clamps were to let me prop the thing at a convenient sawing angle and not go off at a tangent.
