Dang it…
As a kid in 1965 I could buy a 1:25th scale AMT car kit of a standard North American convertible for $2.50 from any drug store or hobby shop. A 3-In-1 kit with some custom parts and a fancy decal sheet.
Today I saw a retro AMT kit looking precisely the same for about $60. I was mildly tempted but scandalised by the price. When I got home I did some calculations, though.
They say that money conservatively invested doubles itself in ten years. That is if you have the capital to spare and can leave it in disciplined solitude.
The $2.50 would have grown to $5.00 by 1975, $10.00 by 1985, etc. the surprise is that it would be $160 by now…even assuming a loss to the government through taxes of some 35%, you would still be left with $104.00. That’s enough for the kit with paint and thinner thrown in.
The problem is I did not sock away the $2.50 in 1965 and the original kit has long since been lost. So that $60.00 price tag still looks like a big number…
