Bristol Mk32 Superfreighter – Part Four – Ferryfield

Also known as Lydd Airport. Still exists in Kent and does a roaring trade in light plane movements.

But the Bristol 170 era was the 50’s to the 80’s before roll-on-roll-off ferries at the seaports took the vehicular Channel traffic and the Channel Tunnel took the train passengers. They were flying an amazing number of people between Lydd and Le Touquet all year round and the other ferry fields like Southend serviced further north into France and Belgium.

My wife was a passenger from Lydd on a number of occasions so this build is for her. The Mini will be moved further aboard once I locate a 1:76 1959 Vauxhall.

Did one want a more accurate Bristol 170 one might buy a Fly Models Mk21 kit. I may do so, but I will also keep an eye out for another Airfix stash kit. The RCAF version still calls and I’ve got the vac-form parts to do it. The next time I do this the front will be a closed nose.

Give Airfix their due. They were adventurous in the day. They might have had to turn out Spitstangschmitts like all the other firms to pay the electricity bill, but they did hit the unusual button now and again. I build ’em in admiration.
