Lovely, red, gleaming – piled in geometric order out the front of the fruiterer’s shop. A temptation to buy apples.
Or to steal one. How many children and youths have succumbed to the temptation of the display? How many destitute adults…hunger driving them. The fruit seller has legal rights and morality and more fruit than they can eat themselves…
Same thing for any exhibition of good things. How many children are cautioned not to touch, but cannot resist it?How many adults?
It is sadly true that you should never exhibit something you cannot lose – either to theft or damage. Whether you become expert in external protection or internal stoicism is a matter of choice. But do not adopt either course of action without acknowledging the fact that you have set out a temptation and a risk.
