CAC Winjeel – Part One – The Native Name

Air forces all over the world have code name families for their aircraft.

Thus you get fighter plane names that project power like the USAAF Thunderbolt and Lightning or training names like the RCAF Yale and Harvard. In Australia there is a tendency to apply aboriginal native names to aircraft Like Boomerang and Wirraway.

The training aircraft from the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation in the 1950’s was named the Winjeel – a native word meaning ” Don’t hit anything expensive. “. For basic RAAF pilots, a very good principle.

High Planes models on box opening are a little daunting – two raggedy plastic sprue trees, a bag of resin castings, and a similar bag of whitemetal parts. A vac-form canopy and decals and instructions. But do not daunt – they generally make up to a fine model.

This aircraft also flew in a FAC role as well, so it need not be built in silver and orange – decision to be taken later.

I initially thought it was just a repeat of a Percival Proctor but it looks as though design influence was used, but not slavishly.
