Mirage III CJ – Part Four – Who’s Hiding?

And from whom? Where are they lurking? Is it all just nonsense these days?

I have no idea – I presume the various air forces have worked out how to hide in the air with grey paint and rubber knobs on every sharp point of an aircraft. The business of greying out national insignia to the point of pointlessness seems to be the fashion of the times.

What of the planes parked? Well, presumably the various people who are worried about being bombed on the ground try not to park all their aircraft in straight lines out in the middle of the runway. That’s been tried and never worked out very well. Nearly everyone knows someone who has sneaked up and cratered runways – even if it was just themselves.

Neither do they all dig themselves into the side of mountains like the Swiss or build concrete block shelters like the Soviets. I suspect some just disperse the assets amongst the wadis and palm trees and hope for the best. It is the only explanation I can give for the various tri-colour Israeli camouflage schemes that have been seen. They seem to have settled upon three standard colours, but different makers or squadrons seem to have different patterns. This mirage has the three-stripe version.

Note as well that there has been the seemingly counter-productive schemes that have big old stripes or yellow triangle panels on wings and tail – as well as the tri-colour camo. Afraid of getting shot by their own side as they fly, though the aircraft so marked were quite distinctive and were only on the side of the good guys.

My solution to it all? Paint em all nipple pink and throw a tarp over them on the ground. And sell space on the wings for advertising.

What the hell – if you’re armed with air-to-air missiles and cannons you get to be any colour you want.
