CAC Wirraway – Part Three – An Evergreen Cockpit

When the world gives you bare cockpits you just go out and build your own.

The High planes Wirraway is a kit on a budget and there doesn’t seem to be enough in the kitty for much interior. I count a cockpit floor, two seats, two control sticks, and a couple of instrument panels. As I plan to build the combat version I will use the kit’s Vickers and mounting and save the rather nicely-moulded spare control stick for another model.

The set of plans I mentioned earlier has a full drawing of the tubing cage that makes up the airframe structure. wonderful, but beyond me for 1:72 scale. I was, however, able to make basic side rails and connecting struts and fasten them to the styrene floor pan. With a bit of sanding they slid into the cockpit after the fuselage was joined. they are not complete, but give the flavour of the structure through the clear canopy.

The joy of Wirraways is there are so many of them preserved – the pictures of the cockpit are everywhere. and the British cockpit green shows nicely against the darker RAAF jungle camouflage.
