Open Form Modelling

You might think that individuality and enterprise would be rewarded enough in scale modelling when we choose one of the options on the kit instructions. Or when we go the whole hog and get a packet of aftermarket resin or brass.

Past that, there are the heady heights of what-iffery and enthusiast sci-fi to absorb any further energies. But you would be far from the truth.

Some enthusiasts usefully and thoughtfully engage in following the diktat of manufacturers who themselves have no solid foundation for their products. They kit things that never were, are not, and never will be, and do so to strict guidelines. Whole careers can be pursued following their lead, but the only people who can understand where they are going is other people who have been similarly recruited.

Is it possible to step even further? Can a scale modeller make a model of something only they understand and present it for the judgment of others? Do they have to please or impress for the judges to be pleased or impressed?

Is it not sufficient for them to declare that they are famous and deserve to be put in a hall?
