Airco DH2 – Part One – Shelf Lurker

This Smer kit of a 1/48th Airco ( by De Havilland ) sat on the storage room shelf of my hobby club from the day I joined until the day the committee finally were exasperated enough with the mess in there to clear out the dead wood.

I am one of the natural sink traps for this sort of thing so I have been given the privilege of building it. It is larger than my normal scale, but – like the Ansaldo, it will be a fine exercise in biplaning.

The moulded parts look good on their trees and the design looks as if it has proper places to cement the struts and attachments. Quite whether the wings and fuselage will meld seamlessly is unknown, but you only find that out at the assembly stage. Let’s face it, if dear old Aurora could make WW1 Famous Fighters simple enough for a 5th grader to put together, so can everyone else…if they try.

I cannot find many variants in colour scheme on the internet from that on the box – I might as well adopt it as the plan. At least the inter-plane struts are candy striped and the wheel covers are red. It feeds the dopamine…

The decals look fine, and I do not trust them a millimetre. A week taped in the window and then a lacquer coat before they ever see water.
