Or just inability to mix paint right? I wondered this as I inspected the Mil 4 model this week after spraying the grey undercoat. I had run out of Base White 1000 – my preferred undercoat for models that are going to be white or yellow – and was forced back to a jar of Mr. Surfacer 1500.

Impatient as always, I used a rapid -drying thinner and then wondered if I had chosen the wrong one. The resultant undercoating was looking pretty thin. Then I noticed that the extremely fine detail that Hobby Boss put on the exterior was still visible. In the past some of this would have been submerged under the surfacer.

I decided to go on with the job rather than re-coat it – to see if that detail would still appear after the colour coat. There is only so much that 1/72 can show.

Note the neat occluding of the rear compartment and the sliding cockpit doors- show-card tacked with Liquitape dots. Peels off without a trace later on.
