Israeli Phantom – Part Four – Kurnas

I get two spellings for this name in google searches, but as a website run by the IAF uses one “s”, I figure I’ll go with that. They’d know.

The aircraft is just about to go out on the display concrete at Schmattarim but experts will note that the intakes are empty and there is no refuelling system installed. This will be remedied if I can find some after-market parts – otherwise there will be a session of gluing plastic rods together.

The kit marks the first use of information supplied by tank modellers and first serious use of a bottle of Gunze material I’ve had for years.

The advice came from tankers who weather their models extensively. I wanted to denature the strong colours of the camouflage but without losing the hues. I added Gunze Mr Color No. 45 – Sail. It lightened, but without bleaching to a white.

The second part of the mix was No. 30 Flat Base. This jar was so old – unused – that it had gone hard. But a fill-up with Gunze rejuvenating liquid dissolved it again, and I could spoon a scoop into the weathering mix. It made the thin spray go flat as you like.

The result is everything I wanted when I thought of the model. I suspect it could even be sprayed retro-actively on models that are just too shiny. I have not tried it on canopies but that is the next project for Schmattarim.
