Swedish Hampden – Part Two – Grey Is Better?

Hmmmm. I am unsure. Ask me later.

The grey plastic of this Airfix Vintage Classic seems to have a different fel to it from that of the 2010 version I built. Harder, stiffer, and less warped. I have only found one shot shot and one sink and the short shot is in the perfect place for wear and tear on the real aircraft.

Note that this is entirely a different plastic than the light grey of the current first-line Airfix kits. There is a chemical story there somewhere if only we could dig it out. It would be a really good study for other model makers as well, but I’ll bet there are industrial secrets that they do not want to share.

In any case the insides were successfully painted and stuck on the inside and the outsides were carefully cemented together on the outside. The aggressive rivet detail was tamed with some wet-and-dry 600 paper – this was so successful I think I shall try it again with other period kits.

Nothing is filled or puttied. The wing roots have sanded flat and meet the fuselage perfectly. This is such a pleasure when it happens.
