If You Want A Lesson In Painting…

Buy a ready-made die-cast model car and change the colour on it.

You will have to go through the process of disassembly and paint stripping to get to the bare casting. Then you’ll need to apply an undercoat and then a long series of thin paint coats to get back to what was originally there.

But I’m betting you’ll not completely win. I tried to change the colour of an Oxford 1:76 Vauxhall Cresta to match one used by my wife’s family in 1959 and largely succeeded – however the level of painted detail you can get on the small parts is nowhere near as precise as the factory did.

Grille work, trim, and licence plates are crude when you do them after the main lacquer dries. Not too big a deal, and the basic colour change was necessary, but you only really want to do it as a last resort.

At least the new tiny cars are assembled with screws so disassembly is an easy thing. Do only as much as needful.
