Supermarine Spitfire Mk XIX – Part Two – ” Well! Excuse Me! “

Oops! Sorry, madam. I have intruded upon you while you are in a state of composition.

One might take pictures of a lady in a state of undress, but one should never do so when she only has half her make-up on. I seem to have caught the new PRU spitfire with putty in her gaps and surfacer under her wings.

Presumably tomorrow will see this all right – the Perfect Putty sands away easily and the Mr. Surfacer 1000 should do so as well. Not that there was much needed – this new-moulded Airfix kit has remarkably tiny seams. I hope for a sleek surface so I will take the time to be fussy at this stage. Had she been destined for a matt camo scheme, the extra work would have been superfluous.

I must say I do like the newer Airfix, though in this case I am puzzled that no provision was made for a dashboard decal. At least the new pilot figure is a vast improvement on the 60’s figures…I will be pleased to include him in the build and hope that he can sit in his cockpit without having to lose his feet.

The kit has not pleased some reviewers, however…they decry the Swedish Air Force markings. This is just British insularity – apparently there is a good market for plastic kits in Sweden. This may possibly be due to their long nordic winters and the need for something to do inside. I know it was much a feature of my childhood in Canada and Airfix supplied many 50¢ bagged kits to while away grey blizzard days. This isn’t 50¢ by any means, coming at the upper end of my money/engine limit, but it was cheaper by a lot than the Czech kits on the front shelves. They looked lovely, but at stiff prices.

Fortunately there are still some Hobby Boss and Airfix that have not been built yet, and I need not get into the high finances for a while. I may be able to hold out until the next model show when the bargain boxes come out.
