Savoia Marchetti S.79 Sparviero – Part Four – The Green Of A Service Station

A service station on the Autostrada. At 4:35 PM on August 7th. With the door open and the smell of pasta sauce in the air. Not that watery sort of sauce – the real thick stuff.

Well, you need to know what you want to do before you do it, or you’ll never know whether you succeeded. In this case I wanted a light green because Italeri said it was so in the old days. And I had no light green. But I had light blue and dark green and white and a vague recollection of what pasta sauce smells like… So I mixed and sprayed and glued.

And wasn’t I surprised when I looked on the internet and found the preserved S.79 in Italy at the aero museum. They had painted the interior almost exactly the same shade of green as I had concocted. I can’t tell you how relieved I was – I dreaded going to Italy in the middle of winter to repaint their airplane. They would have been so embarrassed…
