Savoia Marchetti S.79 Sparviero – Part Six – It’s All A Whitewash

And all the better for it. Never mind whitewash in politics or on your back fence. When you whitewash a model it is a sign that you are getting somewhere.

In this case it is Mr Base White 1000 diluted and blown on with a single-action airbrush. The white 1000 is about as good as the grey surfacer 1000 and will not interfere with the ultimate colour coat; Character White from GSI Creos. I do not worry too much about the fact that the white going over the white is harder to see for coverage – it will be a rattle can anyway and these cover well.

The window masking is Mr Masking Sol R, though the jury is still out whether this is a better material than Micro Mask. The latter sometimes needs a second coat but comes out of its bottle much more readily than the GSI Creos material. And it is easier to peel at the end.

The foam that fills the major cavities is cut from a block of material that is intended to be a soapless scrubbing block. ( ? ) It cuts readily with a micro saw or scissors and has just the right amount of expansion to seal off oddly-shaped openings. It also doesn’t dissolve under a solvent-based paint.

Always a slightly nervous time when you blow paint over those windows for the first time. Are they really sealed? You’ll know when it is too late…
