Seversky P-35 – Part One – Silver Wings

The only reason I bought this Spcial Hobby 1:72 Seversky P-35  is that it can be finished in a gloss silver finish to sit alongside the Douglas B-18 Bolo reconnaissance plne that has just been completed. The Mr. Color Super metallic finish of that big ship is so nice I decided to get another pot of paint and a P-35 to go with it.

My internet research for this plane turned up a number of things it wasn’t – successful, mostly. Nor ready on time, advanced, nor adequate against other air forces. But it did serve as the basis upon which design work went ahead for the P-43 Lancer and then one other US Army fighter. Look at the pictures of the sprue and the distinctive shape of the wings and tail and see if you can figure out what it lead up to. Study the picture carefully – the answer will eventually hit you like a thunderbolt.

The kit is pure Special Hobby – softish dark grey plastic, some photo etch, some resin, and a good decal sheet. There are three variants provided – though these are mainly alternative squadrons rather than different ships. All US-based and all in Michigan. Thank goodness the canopy is in three parts as there is a detailed cockpit that may benefit from some exposure.

I was seduced by a couple of the parts on the sprue, thinking them sturdy and precise landing gear legs. Alas, I was mistaken, and this will be another spindly Czech bird that needs careful re-enforcement before it can stand upright. At least the wheels look substantial and the propeller is in one piece. I am grateful for any mercy Prague cares to bestow…
