Republic Thunderflash – Part One – The Flying Photographer

Without realising it I completed a couple of builds that could start a new shelf in the Air Museum – and now I have No. 3 and No. 4 in the stash; a Republic RF84F Thunderflash and A Lockheed RT33. Together with the P-38 PRU and Spitfire PRXIX they are the eyes in the sky for reconnaissance.

The Thunderflash is a Cold Warrior that was apparently used by a number of air forces – there are markings for the French, Norwegians, and Germans as well as the USA. Perhaps this shoiuld be classified as a Hot Warrior version as it is in SEA camouflage.

The kit itself is by Sword. These are becoming a Little Workshop favourite here as they seem to have a good combination of price, detail, and engineering fit. The only cavil I have is that they do not include pilots.

The parts are flash-free and I am hard-pressed to find any burring either. Ejection pin pillars are irrelevant as they are in the interior – panel lines are cleanly cut. The clear parts are excellent and I do not contemplate trouble. I can see only two resin parts; detailed ejection seats.

The instruction book makes no pretence of writing – it is all diagrammatic – at least it seems to be well drawn.

The decals should be fine. They are printed by Techmod. I’ve previous experience with them from a Sword SB2C kit and they seem to release in about 8 seconds and do not disintegrate.

Altogether a pleasing prospect for the Photo-recon shelf. I wonder if there will be enough space on it for a  PR Crusader or a U-2?
