The Star-Rangers Ride Again

Or is the Cosmic Commandos? I stopped reading science fiction along about the time I thought about Wernher von Braun bombarding Kent and then working for NASA…and never took it up again. I was content to watch the real space rockets take off on television and just hope that none of his were headed my way.

But the subject is still really popular. I believe they made a movie called ” Star Wars ” and it played in the cinemas for several weeks. Modern children/teenagers/adults also take an interest in the genre and are prepared to buy up big on kits and build up big with scratch materials.

They have also featured in the WASMEX scale model exhibitions on a number of occasions and have the annoying habit of pleasing the public so much that they get one of the top prizes.

The science fiction modeller actually has as large a fund of history and information as many other real-world modellers. And they have an advantage – there can be little fighting over exact paint shades if the screen representations are models themselves or CGI work. Mind you, I bet they still have anoraks who pop up and twit them on the exact shade of grey-green…” I think you’ll find…” being the mating cry of the species.

I wonder if Sci-Fi anoraks have shoulder flashes like the 1930’s Buzz Rogers space suits? Bet you could sell ’em on eBay.

Make of the spacecraft what you will – I enjoy looking at them even if I do not understand them. The painting and weathering alone is worth it. Plus the business of scratch building means that there is a wider variety of sizes and scales available to see. How many smaller plastic kits are dismembered for a large space ship?
