Piper J3 – Part Five – The Universal Cub

The best thing about the Piper J3 Cub is it is so darned cute. The second best thing is that it is ubiquitous. It can sit on the tarmac of any of my airports or air museums from the 1930’s onward and be perfectly at home.

The kit has proved to be a beauty – the windows fitted very well, despite needing to be trimmed slightly. KP gave directions for this themselves, which makes me think they have several other Cubs in the planning. Certainly they included a second fuselage and windows for a glassier military version in this kit.

It really is encouragement to see what other light civilian aircraft are being kitted in 1:72. I despair of seeing the exact planes that sit out at Jandakot – just as I despair of 1:72 models of modern and period airliners in recognisable liveries.

But eventually we must have enough variants of Me 109’s, Spitfires, and Mustangs and the design offices will need to cast further afield. The Russians already do in their aviation history with varied degrees of success, so it’s time for the west to man up and model out.
