The Curse Of The Were-Lancaster

Or FrankenHalifax. Or worse “ The Superfortress That Took Over The Lounge Room “.

We’re talking about aircraft model kits that have dazzled their builders with large-scale detail. The 1:32 and 1:24 scale kits that are the talk of the modelling world right up until they are built and the proud owner tries to find a place to store and display them. Then the talk comes from the spouse and the words become Anglo-Saxon…but not Shakespeare.

Big models are not just confined to aircraft kits. Railway guns, ships and submarines, and very large cars all come to mind as shelf and marriage busters. I built a number of 1:18 scale buildings to accompany die cast cars and they are crowding out my model room even though the cars are long gone. They are too big to store and too dear to the heart to discard. The only acceptable fate would be sale…and you need to be lucky to find someone wiling to share your tastes in models.

A point has ben mooted recently by Phil Flory…the venture by a moulding firm to release aircraft kits in 1:35 scale to match the widespread armour and accessory market. I think it is an excellent idea that would benefit all parties. The equal release of more 1:48 scale vehicles and buildings would have much the same effect. Even 1:64 would see a useful tie-up with a vast die cast market.

More cooperation, fellas!
