Of course, I also believe in pixies and the Lone Ranger, so take that into account. You may want to put a disclaimer on most of this conversation.
Verbal advice in scale modelling is generally worth the paper it’s not printed on. It can be had from shopkeepers trying to sell you something, friends trying to get something from you, or club members trying to make sure that you glue yourself to your next model. The good ideas will be entirely indistinguishable from the bad one when you first hear them, but you’ll find out the difference later as the doctor saws you free.
That may seem a bit cynical, but cynicism is a lot better than stoicism when it comes to preventing disasters rather than putting up with them. It pays to question everything, and frequently from multiple sources. It’s possible that they are all ganging up on you, but if they are mean they’ll likely be doing it to each other. In amongst the mines and booby traps there may be some sound advice.
People do operate upon their own frequencies and some of them do so very well. The methods can vary without it being a forced thing. After all, many people have learned their techniques from books and magazines and there are a lot of them out there. So realise there are many ways up the mountain.
And people can change – just as you might do when you discover a better idea. If you hear something different from a modeller don’t suspect it completely – it may be the result of new discoveries.
