F-82 Twin Mustang – Part Seven – Long Dong

All right. We might as well get this over with…

Those of you inclined to ribaldry may dissolve into laughter at the thought of the Long Dong radar pod joke. Elbow each other in the ribs and snort. The rest of the readers just be patient.

The Monogram F-82 is proceeding wonderfully well, with no fit issues whatsoever. There will be no filler needed in the main structure – a testament to the moulding skills of the factory.

The humorous radar pod has been attached with slow-setting cement and the airframe put aside to dry overnight. The fit of the cockpits was exceptionally good, and all on the basis of two plastic pins formed on the inside of the fuselage halves. Such a simple design, and so hard for the European makers to incorporate into their own mouldings.

The underwing mounting points are also good – precise enough to swing even large tanks with precision. Period photos show an odd mixture of plain-metal tanks along with various armaments, but the night-fighter version as flown out of bases in the Pacific Northwest for late-40’s air defence were bare of rocketry or bombs – they just depended upon the six .50’s in the center section of the wing.

A week at the most for this build, but it will look good.
