Tornado GR.1 – Part Four – Ms. Emily

I keep my promises. I said I would name this aircraft after he lady who gave me the kit, and so I have; Ms. Emily. She is a lovely dance entertainer here in Perth.

The Desert Storm Pink is not a regular pot colour from Gunze. It’s made up of a tan with some red added, and is probably going to be unique to this build. We were in a paint drought when it was time to spray so there was no proprietary colour to use.

I am probably not finished painting, either, as all the images of Tornados that I’ve seen show a filthy exhaust blast that is directed up past the tail when the plane is slowed with thrust reversers. I did outline the surface grooves with weathering enamel from a steel pen, but the exhaust blast will be thinned acrylic wash blown on.

This is an unfamiliar aircraft for me, but I can see where it would be popular with Europeans. If I build another I’ll close the wings to provide a contrast to this one. Perhaps a Luftwaffe example in their darker European camouflage pattern. And there are newer models of this, as well as examples moulded by different kit makers. I was well satisfied with the Italeri version, but it is always interesting to have a comparison.
