Convair Atlas D – Part One – Old Home To New Home

I used to live where these things were deployed. I now live where the scale model is made.

This kit from Horizon Models was advertised for some time in the Australian scale model magazine – but I did not see it at the time. Then it got to Phil Flory and I sat up and took notice. A google search for a dealer, an order, and here we are.

Australian made, and very well made it is, too. The three sprues are as clean as anything from the major manufacturers. There is no canopy, of course, but I’ll bet they would do good work on clear styrene for aircraft.

Big parts – as befits a big missile. I am used to working in titchy 1:72 aircraft…most recently WW1 biplanes. This is a muscle memory re-aligner of a kit. The major airframe components need drilling out for attachment of side-rockets and pipes ( this was no Disney sleek space rocket. This was a warhead lifter and each missile only had to work once… ). They also need some careful fettling around the location pins to ensure the halves of the airframe come into full contact with each other.

The instructions are admirably clear, and the decal sheet – printed in Australia – looks world-class. Lots of stencils, drat it, but the final finish where they will be applied is genuinely polished gloss, so they should be easy.
