Minimalist Modelling

Paint everything white.

Corbusier Kits: sheets of foamcore board and you just glue them together in slabs.

I have been experimenting with a less complex approach to scale model building these last few months. Not that kit building can ever be truly simple…or for that matter neither can Lego or Meccano work. Doll houses are complexity itself, though charming.

My experiments have ranged from seeing if all paints can be treated alike with thinners and spraying…and I’ve narrowed down the amount of chemistry I have to mix to get a decent job.

I’ve compared finishes and discarded some complex products. I’ve also observed other modellers struggling with famous name paints and lacquers and decided not to get into the trouble they experience.

Now I am re-assessing the tools I use and the places I keep them. As my modelling is shared between several clubs and locations, I have necessarily to take a kit of tools and paints as well as the plastic models around town.

I seek to reduce the size and weight of the kit so that I can carry it more easily and possibly even take it on free public transport every fortnight. So far I have packed a morning’s or afternoon’s work into a duffle hold-all and had everything to hand for at least a 4 hour session. Easy to haul down the street or up a flight of stairs.

More insights as I discover them.
