Making A Hobby Out Of A Job

It’s generally the other way round, isn’t it.

People go along loving something they do for themselves and then someone suggests money should be made from it. The hobby becomes a side-hustle, and then a venture, and then a full-blown job. Eventually it palls and the former enthusiast comes to hate it. So they take up a hobby…

Far luckier the person who is doing a job and finds themselves liking it more and more. They find that they are getting better at it without realising that the reason for this is that enthusiasm is training them.

The engagement and enjoyment increase to the point where the financial reward is largely forgotten. This can be fine if the business takes care of itself, but if it needs a good financial eye that is half-closed in pleasure, the whole thing can fail.

Moral? Keep three houses. Put your job in one, your family in another, and your hobby in the third. Visit each house in turn but don’t spend all your time in any one.
