Pride Is A Cheap Emotion

Well it is, if you do it right.

Scale modelling can be done with pretty nearly any purse…though the hobby shops would like you to browse on the expensive shelves. The prices can rise to pretty nearly any level that you could name.

People who purchase and build the expensive kits can generally be assured that something nice will eventuate. They may have to fight their way through a blizzard of resin and photo-etch brass on the way but eventually there will be a masterpiece.

Those of us who browse on the bottom incur a lot less expense, but with a bit of imagination we can also end up with very satisfying models. And most of the time there will be not brass to curse.

I love starting with a stash or garage sale model that has deteriorated in storage. In most cases the decals will be cactus and the box a rotting disaster, but as long as the critical parts still exist, you are away to an adventure. Ten bucks or less at risk and you can afford to try out fresh techniques.

Will you have a state-of-the-art result? Yes, but it might be the the state of the 1961 art. No bad thing, as it will show you what the roots of the hobby were.
