The Opened Box

And the started model.

I find that I can slumber, bored, in most horror or adventure movies. They are predictable, and I know that there will be creepy music, several minor characters will die, and the hero will be saved in the end. Ho Hum.

No such thing with the scale model kit that falls into your hands from a stash or legacy sale if it has been started by the departed. If you join the journey you have no idea where you will finish up.

I am a realist. Sentimentality aside, I look at a kit to see if there is something in it for me. This may not be much, and my desires may not match those of anyone else, but I have to find something in there before I’ll commit myself.

Some kits are opened, but not started. I look carefully to see if internal bags are sealed and instructions and decals present. These are the good ones.

Some have been so jostled and fiddled with that the parts are wrenched from the sprue trees. More careful inspection…can they be reconditioned?

Some have been partly assembled, but in good form. Are they suitable for painting and completion?

Some are botched. Can they be saved? Should they just be closed up and discretely put back on the pile?
It is not a sin to take care of your own peace of mind.
