The Kit That Doesn’t Teach You Anything

Is best left closed.

Every scale model kit you undertake to build ( as opposed to just buy and store ) should teach you something. Some will do so by showing you a prototype that is new. Some will show you a new technique. Some will introduce a new manufacturer.

Equally, some will alert you to the decline of an older one. You may have to build a dog of a kit to find out that the breeder has lost the ability to turn out decent products. A failed pup means you do not risk your money there again.

Some kits will challenge you past your ability…or the limits of your medication. You may rise to the occasion fully, partially, or not at all – but any small increase in skill or pride is a definite reason the cherish the kit.

Some kits will show you the errors of your ways – the most valuable revelation of all. If you have been getting away with it and all of a sudden are stopped short, you have had a definite win. It might bruise your ego or conscience, but bruises heal.

As trite as it sounds, I like to reflect after finishing a kit and taking the final images to see just what I have learned in the process. Some wisdom is expensive and some comes cheaply.
