Building One A Year

Building one model a year may sound like a limiting sort of hobby, but you have to consider what is meant by ” one “…

One scale model railway layout, complete with track, landscape, and operational trains would be an ambitious project for any builder. Even a skilled railway modeller would be daunted.

One scale model wooden sailing vessel – the sort of kit that requires full workshop commitment – would be a full year. And there would be language.

One giant scale model airplane…the R/C type or the top-end kit…could also realistically occupy your whole year’s spare time.

But consider further variants on ” one “:

a. One maker’s kits. A whole year of Airfix, or Revell, or Hobby Boss, etc. You would learn to play the instrument like an expert.

b. One scale. If it is your normal one, well and good. But consider a year’s sabbatical spent building a different scale.
Would you learn more?

c. One type. Build every variant of one prototype that was kitted, and then branch out to special models. Expect to spend big on after-market accessories.

d. One sort. A year of cars, or trains, or ships.

e. One kit – built repeatedly. Strait-jacket time, perhaps.

  1. I think I’m on a one kit year. It’s going to take the better part of 12 months to identify and fabricate the parts the kit designer just left out. A steam engine without pistons does not make a lot of sense.
