If it is only one model, it says that you are just getting started – and that it is lonely for companionship.

Time to go out and buy another kit. This is when you start to have a voice in the narrative.

If you buy another model kit in the same scale, but of a different prototype, you are on your way to a logical display. If it is the same original but in a different scale you are also starting a sensible collection.

If it is entirely a different genre as well as a different size you may be telling the story of the eclectic builder – or you might just be attracted by the box art.

Go on a few years. Are your models a common scale? A single maker? A particular Army, Navy or Air Force? All one airline? Just one make of car? You can make a strong statement about your hobby. If you have so many models that there is nowhere in the lounge room to set a cup of tea down, your spouse is the one who gets to make strong statements…
