Yak 23 – Part One – Front Line Fighter?

Provided you are smart enough to put the front line as far away from you as possible.

This was the thinking of the Soviet VVS when they donated Yak 23 fighters to the Poles and Czechs in the 1950’s. The Soviets had the MiG15 to defend the Motherland against the west and the inferior Yak 23 could be parcelled out to the satellite nations in the buffer zone to absorb the first of any NATO air assault

Plus if the Poles or Czechs turned stroppy and decided to expel the Soviets, these straight-wing fighters could fall to the superior MiGs. The same sensible principle that saw 19th century Indian sepoys armed with the smooth-bore musket while Ghurkas were given rifled Enfields…

The KP kit was a freebie, and unfortunately someone stepped on the canopy a long time ago. The rest of the kit is admirable – little flash and no sink-marks. The decal and instruction sheets are pieces of history, but given the missing canopy, that is the least of the worries.

Ingenuity will be called for with this one…
